The Indoor Karting Centre contacted GMT as they in their own words “were having a few problems with sound and vision” We attended the site and were horrified with what we saw. After an initial discussion, it was agreed that GMT would conduct a complete Audio and Video Audit of the Arena.
The initial Install had included some very good quality components mixed with very sub standard others, coupled with a hopeless, from the end users standpoint, operational interface. Television monitors had been connected with scart adaptors, which vibrated loose when music was played at Disco levels. Incorrect cabling for loudspeakers and video cabling. Speakers wired out of phase, audio crossovers set incorrectly, sub woofers wired incorrectly, speakers not wired at all, and a projection system that was designed for the odd presentation and not 8 hours a day usage. The worst was sound equipment racks located adjacent to lighting control transformers, creating loud humming through all the audio equipment – clearly not very clever.
Having completed the Audit our first task was to make things SAFE!. We were forced to disconnect several loudspeakers (six feet high loudspeakers) and amplifiers, which we deemed a potential fire hazard. Secondly replace the projection system with a commercial heavy-duty projector with specialised lens system, thus giving bright and clear 14’ projected images in the karting arena. Replace the sealed projector housing with an open vented version, giving the projector a chance to breathe. Next we undertook replacing blown speaker units (re furbishing where possible) and installing correct cross over units.
Currently we are replacing ALL cabling to both speakers and video units, installing additional monitors, replacing all video connectors, replacing power amp units, installing new active crossovers etc etc etc. This is a long and expensive business, but the end result will give easier operation, less down time because of system malfunction and better sound and video experience for the customers.
Result – Client has a Service and Back up service to rely on, and an installation that works and is inherently safe!
